External Accreditation Review Team According To ABET Criteria

EXTERNAL ACCREDITATION REVIEW TEAM ACCORDING TO ABET CRITERIA:

BACHELOR OF ENGINEER IN ELECTRONICS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS
BACHELOR OF ENGINEER IN BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING,

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, VIETNAM NATIONAL UNIVERSITY – HO CHI MINH CITY (VNU-HCM)

From November 10-12, 2024, International University, Vietnam National University – Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM) conducted an accreditation of academic programs for the Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering program – School of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EE), and the Biomedical Engineering program – School of Biomedical Engineering (BME), according to the ABET criteria.

ABET is an accreditation organization established in 1932 by professional associations in the United States. It is a prestigious accrediting body in the international community, recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in the U.S. and other accreditation organizations.

The ABET review team included the participation of:

  • Team Chair: Mr. James (Jim) Plasker (Onsite);
  • Program Evaluation Expert of Electronics & Telecommunications: Dr. Guru Subramanyam (Onsite);
  • Program Evaluator of Biomedical Engineering Program: Dr. Maher Sabbah (Online);
  • Program Evaluator of Electronics & Telecommunications Engineering: Dr. Imad Hanna Elhajj (Online).

The schedule for the 3-day visit was as follows:

Day 1: The expert team met with representatives from the Office of Quality Assurance and Testing (QATO), School of Electrical Engineering, and School of Biomedical Engineering. The team conducted a tour of IU’s facilities, including laboratories, libraries, classrooms, …, to assess how well they meet the research, teaching, and learning needs of lecturers, staff, and students at International University (IU).

Day 2: The expert team conducted direct interviews with the leaders/representatives of units according to the schedule:

  • Mr. James R. (Jim) Plasker – Team Chair – interviews Deans of schools, program chairs/coordinators, lecturers, students, and Board of Presidents, along with leaders of offices/centers such as: Library, head of Center for Information Services, head of Office of Quality Assurance and Testing, head of Office of Undergraduate Academic Affair,…
  • Dr. Professor Guru Subramanyam – Program Evaluation Expert of Electronics & Telecommunications – participates in direct interviews with the leaders of supporting units such as: Department of Physics, School of Languages, and School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering.

Throughout the 3-day visit at IU, the ASIIN experts conducted in-depth discussions and interviews with Board of Presidents, heads of offices/centers, program chairs and coordinators of two programs, as well as lecturers, staff, business partners, students, alumni, and other stakeholders. Besides, the team also toured the infrastructure, laboratories, libraries, offices,…, in order to make accurate assessments for the accreditation results of two programs.

At the exit meeting, each member of the expert team for the two programs presented a preliminary report on the official survey results of the evaluation. The team outlined the strengths of the programs while also providing recommendations for Board of Presidents and program chairs, as well as the program coordinators, to consider further improvements and enhancements in the quality of education. These efforts aim to meet the increasing demands of employers, stakeholders, and the ever-changing labor market while ensuring the rights and interests of the students.

On behalf of the university with programs undergoing evaluation, the representative of Board of Presidents, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Dinh Duc Anh Vu – Vice President, also expressed sincere gratitude to the expert accreditation team for recognizing the strengths of programs, particularly for providing accurate feedback on the current state of programs and valuable recommendations for the university. He also affirmed that the consideration and immediate implementation of quality improvement plans based on the team’s recommendations should be carried out promptly.

The exit meeting ended at 2:00 PM on November 12, 2024.
